Understanding World Video Formats

The most popular Video Format, especially it being the home of Movies and with the launch of DVD's is the American Signal Format NTSC (or comically known by UK Engineers as "Never The Same Colour twice").

NTSC

NTSC stands for National Television Standards Committee. It is the video transmission standard for North and Central America, including Mexico and Canada and Japan. Its technical format is 525 lines per frame with roughly 30 fps (frames per second) refresh rate. There are two types of NTSC 3.58 and 4.43.

PAL

PAL (Phase Alteration Line) is the European counterpart to the NTSC standard. It has a higher vertical resolution (625 lines per frame) but a lower refresh rate (25 frames per second) that can cause flickering. It is the standard for the UK, Western Europe, the Middle East, and parts of Africa and South America.

SECAM

SECAM (Systeme Electronic Pour Couleur Avec Memoire) is very similar to PAL. It specifies the same number of scan lines and frames per second, but differs in that chrominance (colour) is FM modulated. It is the broadcast standard for France, Russia and parts of Africa and Eastern Europe.

What is Psuedo PAL / PAL60

This signal is produced generally by hardware that is multi-system or NTSC playback. The colour information is changed automatically, but the frequency is left at 60Hz, whereby the Pal standard is 50Hz. Most new TV sets, and all Plasma, LCD's etc., are now capable of accepting both 50 & 60Hz. However, this signal is not a true PAL or NTSC signal, therefore when using it to change the world standard via a converter, inevitable it is not compatible, unless the converter is also able to handle 60/50 conversions. (the following models from www.lektropacks.co.uk have this ability ADC660, CDM150 & CDM630)

World RF

Each country transmits television via its own local terrestrial transmitters. These vary from country to country and require the correct tuner type to decode the RF to AV.

Some suitable tuners can be found at www.lektropacks.co.uk - DVB1001BE, CMT1C, & CMT1H, or simply use a VCR from that particular country.
