Removing or Defeating Macrovision™

Is the removal of MACROVISION™ illegal?

Yes, in some countries, it always has been. Yet Macrovision™ felt it necessary to obtain new legislation that came into effect approx November 2003; whereby it is now illegal to sale, advertise or own any device that is solely for circumvention of Macrovison™. This has caused several companies to withdraw such devices from the market. For viewing of this law, which covers both Computing and AV Recording, click here.

Is this law worldwide?

No, this law only covers those countries within the European Community.

If I reside outside the European Community can I still purchase a device to defeat Macrovision™ ?

Yes, but as most companies have now eliminated these products from their websites - you may find it necessary to telephone them - however, there are many devices that still remove copy protection by default; i.e. a device that is not purely designed for defeating copy protection. Note: This applies to ONLY those people who reside outside the EEC.

I only want to copy my own Home Movies - can I still do this?

Yes, as genuine home movies should not be copy protected, but if you are experiencing problems telephone call Lektropacks on 08700 711 911 (or +44(0)208 847 2776). See products CCR1SRGBCCR2SRGB, CTB100, CTB100G, CTB531 & CTB531R.

I am not trying to record any copy protected material but the viewing of DVD's etc., is still disturbed by Macrovision™?

This is generally caused by the way you have your AV equipment hooked up; i.e. routing your DVD player through your VCR. There are many solutions to this type of problem and therefore suggest you get in touch with a company that is knowledgeable in this area. www.lektropacks.co.uk in order to discuss the issues you have.

Note: There are people who have the legal right to remove copy protection and therefore suggest that they telephone Lektropacks to discuss their issues or requirements.

***Macrovision™ is the trade mark for Macrovision™ Corporation see
